At Lilac Kids Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to create a world of healthy, happy smiles for every child who walks through our doors. We work closely with families to create tailored treatment plans that prioritize a comfortable experience and optimal dental health for our young patients.

Your First Visit

Our mission is to provide optimal dental care for infants, children, adolescents and people with special health care needs. Our staff is dedicated to providing the best dental care possible. We want to help all children feel good about visiting the dentist and teach them how to care for their teeth.

At the first visit: Your child’s first visit will include a complete oral exam by the dentist. At that time, we may take the necessary dental X-rays to complete our diagnosis. If time and your child’s behavior allow, we may include a cleaning and fluoride treatment at this visit. If not, these will be scheduled for the second appointment. The dentist will discuss your child’s dental health with you, and review the treatment options. We will then customize a treatment plan for your child.

Your role as a parent: We want your child’s first dental visit with us to be positive. You can play a large part in preparing your child for his or her first visit. Try to be relaxed and at ease. Any anxiety on your part may be sensed by your child. Tell your child we will count and take pictures of his or her teeth. Do not use any fear provoking words such as “hurt, drill, pull or needle.” Avoid statements like “the dentist will not hurt you.” (If I say “Don’t think of a banana”, the first thing you will imagine is a banana. It is the same thing with the word “hurt”.)

Our staff will explain everything to your child in terms he or she can understand. We encourage parents to be present for this first visit. We request, however, that the parent be a “passive observer” during all subsequent visits.

Most children have a more positive experience when the parent is not present in the treatment area.

Your child’s full attention is needed in order to explain what we do, so at times we may request the parent leave the treatment area. Please know we will do so only as a means of improving the care your child receives. No other children will be allowed back, so you may want to bring a second adult to supervise your additional children in the waiting room.

If your child requires further dental treatment such as a filling, extraction, or other procedure, we will discuss the best method of helping your child have a positive experience. We will discuss our behavior management techniques with you as well.
